How This Trade Impacts San Antonio

The San Antonio Spurs are entering the 2021-22 season with some question marks offensively. They may already have an idea of what they are going to do, but from an outside perspective, it looks as if they are missing a go-to player on that end of the court.

The offense has been run through DeMar DeRozan for years, but he departed in free agency, going to the Chicago Bulls in a sign-and-trade deal. They could wait and see if someone emerges from the group of Dejounte Murray, Derrick White, Keldon Johnson, and Lonnie Walker IV.

If no one does, this is a deal the Spurs would likely get behind. Collin Sexton would provide the team with a bonafide first scoring option. He is only 22-years old, entering his fourth season in the NBA, and has already surpassed the 20-point per game mark twice.

He has shown a better shooting stroke and more efficient offense than expected coming out of Alabama. He is improving as a playmaker and finisher inside the arc, which would raise his ceiling even more.

Sexton could be the focal point of the San Antonio offense going forward. The Spurs are also getting another rotation player in Cedi Osman in this deal. He offers some versatility on the wing and is someone Gregg Popovich could assuredly find a role for.

If the Spurs are unable to use Murray in a package to land someone they have been pursuing such as Ben Simmons, flipping him for a new offensive centerpiece in Sexton could make sense for the franchise going forward.
