Cleveland Cavaliers: Collin Sexton

There was a lot of talk in the offseason about Collin Sexton and his future in Cleveland with the Cavaliers and while they ultimately decided not to trade him, they also decided not to extend him long-term. This could hint at the Cavaliers looking to move the young guard at some point during the 2021-22 season, but this is a move that could really come back to hurt this organization.

Since LeBron James left the Cavaliers ahead of the 2018-19 season, this franchise has been trying to rebuild and create a sustainable, young team for the future success of this organization.

Collin Sexton was the first high-level young talent they brought in after James left and since being drafted 8th overall in 2018, he has only led them in scoring two of the last three seasons and has proven to be one of the best young scorers in the league.

Through his first three seasons in the league, Sexton has averaged 20.2 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists and has shot 45.8% from the floor, 38.5% from three-point range. Continuing to get better, Year 4 seems to be a big one for Collin Sexton, as he is still looking to prove that he is a max contract type of player.

Being only 22-years-old and turning 23 this season, Collin Sexton is definitely a player that a team in this league can build around in their backcourt for many years to come, so why are the Cavaliers waiting around?

Maybe they still believe that they can leverage Sexton in a trade for a guy like Ben Simmons, but in reality, they are going to regret not extending their young guard.

If the Cavaliers do not trade Collin Sexton, they truly do run the risk of losing him in free agency next offseason, even though he is going to be a restricted free agent. Any team in the league can sign him to a big offer sheet and while the Cavaliers would have the ability to go over the cap to bring him back, can they really afford to do so?

Moving Kevin Love and his $30M contract would definitely allow the Cavaliers to bring back Collin Sexton with no long-term financial problems, but this does not seem like something that is going to happen either. The Cavaliers now find themselves in a very tough position financially and they may not be able to keep Sexton long-term as a result.
