How This Trade Impacts New Orleans Pelicans
The New Orleans Pelicans have two excellent building blocks in Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram. They have both made an All-Star game already and have immense upside. Unfortunately, outside of Ingram, there isn’t much for Williamson to get excited about to remain with the organization long-term.
Convincing Williamson, despite all of his injury concerns, to stay long-term is what the Pelicans should be focusing on. They cannot afford to lose another superstar entering his prime as they did with Anthony Davis a few years ago.
Being competitive in the playoff race and winning some games would help keep Williamson in town. Acquiring a player such as Tyler Herro should help the team achieve that.
Herro has shown that he can be a big-time player with his performance in the Orlando Bubble in 2020 as a rookie. He was unable to consistently replicate that during his sophomore season but has looked locked in during this preseason.

Herro is an excellent fit alongside Williamson with her perimeter skill set. He is shown the ability to knock shots down with some consistency from the perimeter and has some playmaking chops as well.
New Orleans would have three excellent offensive weapons in Williamson, Ingram, and Herro that would be tough for opposing teams to slow down. When you include the 3-point shooting exploits of Devonte’ Graham, the middle should be wide open for Williamson to wreak havoc.

The package is a little steep, but New Orleans has plenty of draft capital to dip into. New Orleans would essentially be betting on Herro developing more in this environment than Nickeil Alexander-Walker. It is a risky bet, but one the Pelicans should be making.
