Does this trade make sense for the Toronto Raptors?
Seeing as there are a lot of unknowns about this roster and team, the Toronto Raptors would be smart to hold off on making any significant trades. Their current core of VanVleet, Anunoby, Trent Jr. and Siakam could be enough to push this team back into the playoffs, but Masai Ujiri really needs to evaluate what direction this franchise is trending in.
As stated, they definitely have the capability to make it back to the playoffs, but how far can this team realistically go? They are not close to being on the same level as the Nets and Bucks, so they could really be stuck in terms of being a team that has a small chance to win their first-round series.
Pascal Siakam is an All-Star-level player and Fred VanVleet is a proven champion in the Raptors’ backcourt, but this team does not have an “alpha”. Kawhi Leonard and Kyle Lowry were each leaders that could carry a team to victories, but when you look at this Raptors roster, they do not have this kind of player anymore. Siakam has reached the peak of his career, but Anunoby has a chance to be the next great thing in Toronto.
Trading him right now is not good for the Raptors, even if they do get two bright young talents like Coby White and Patrick Williams. Anunoby is a few years older than Williams but is already far more proven and in terms of acquiring White, the Raptors do not necessarily need him since they have Fred VanVleet and Malachi Flynn, who they are very high on as a young guard in this league.
LATEST NBA NEWS & RUMORS: This Bulls-Raptors Trade Is Focused On Goran Dragic
OG Anunoby’s stock is going to continue to trend upwards and by midseason, if the Toronto Raptors want to trade him, they can definitely get a lot more assets than those offered by the Bulls. This is not a terrible deal proposed by Chicago by any means, it just is not the right deal for Toronto right now.
