The Los Angeles Lakers took a big risk this NBA offseason when they acquired former All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook from the Washington Wizards. Acquiring Westbrook changed the whole landscape of the roster.

Los Angeles had to include three players from their rotation to acquire him; Kyle Kuzma, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, and Montrezl Harrell. The No. 22 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft was also included.

Westbrook will be taking over the starting point guard spot from Dennis Schroder. Schroder was unable to step up when the team needed him most last season. Declining the contract extension the Lakers offered him ended up being a blessing in disguise for the purple and gold.

Now, with Westbrook in the fold, the Los Angeles Lakers are a more dangerous team. But, there will have to be some sacrifices and adjustments made so that things can go smoothly.

Westbrook isn’t a perfect fit alongside LeBron James and Anthony Davis schematically. While all three occupy a different level of the offense, all three are used to having the ball in their hands. They will have to adjust their games accordingly so that the team can win.

Head coach Frank Vogel believes that Westbrook’s experience with the Houston Rockets and the players being motivated to win a championship will make it easier to blend things together and find chemistry.

“He’s willing to do whatever we ask him to do to help this team win a championship. It’s the only thing that matters to him. He’s not concerned with anything else.”

LeBron James and Anthony Davis already won an NBA title together in the Orlando Bubble in 2020. It was the fourth title of James’s career and the first for Davis.

Being on his fourth team in as many seasons, the former UCLA product will be motivated about returning home and being able to prove naysayers wrong that have doubted him.
