Drafted 9th overall in 2013, Trey Burke entered the league as an offensive-minded guard out of Michigan and began his career in Utah, averaging 12.1 points, 4.2 assists, and shooting 35.4% from deep through his first three seasons in the NBA. Burke then went on to spend time with the Wizards, Knicks, Mavericks, and 76ers, only to see his career trajectory trend downwards.

The scoring point guard just could not find a spot in the league and seemed to be on his way to playing overseas, but then the Dallas Mavericks called him up during the 2019-20 season shutdown, asking him if he would like to return to the Mavericks as a “fill-in” player for the NBA Bubble.

Obviously, Burke accepted this role and he played great in eight games with Dallas, averaging 12.0 points, 3.8 assists, and shooting 43.2% from downtown.

As a result of his great play, Dallas signed Burke to a three-year, roughly $9.5M deal ahead of the 2020-21 season with a player option during the 2022-23 season. Now in the second year of this contract though, Dallas seems to be open to moving Trey Burke since Jalen Brunson is their main backup point guard.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavericks have explored the trade market for Trey Burke, but they have been unable to put a trade together.

Stein also mentioned that a buyout is not an option right now due to Burke being owed over $6M in total through the end of his contract.

Dallas is going to have a hard time moving Burke at this point with the new season right around the corner, but the Charlotte Hornets are a young team who could be interested in bringing in a shooting threat like Burke.

LaMelo Ball and Ish Smith are the only two ball-handlers in the Charlotte Hornets’ backcourt right now and with Devonte’ Graham now gone, they could look to utilize a player like Trey Burke in a similar type role given his perimeter shooting abilities. Let’s take a look at what Charlotte would potentially offer up to the Mavericks for Trey Burke.
