The Minnesota Timberwolves are hoping that they can carry over the level of play they had in the final 22 games of the 2020-21 season into the 2021-22 season. Their roster finally get healthier, as former NBA All-Star D’Angelo Russell returned from injury and they started to find their footing on the court.

Minnesota finished the season 11-11, a vast improvement when you consider that they finished the season 26 games under .500 with a record of 23-49. Chris Finch took over as head coach after Ryan Saunders was fired following a 7-24 start. They are hopeful that a full offseason and training camp with Finch in place will lead to better results on the court.

The Timberwolves have some good, young pieces on their roster. Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the best centers in the NBA and arguably the most versatile offensive one. Anthony Edwards had a strong rookie season, averaging 19.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.1 steals in 32.1 minutes per game.

Jaden McDaniels, Naz Reid, Jaylen Nowell, Malik Beasley, Josh Okogie and Leandro Bolmaro are other intriguing young players on the roster with some upside. But, the team is still on the hunt for that star that can help take them over the top.

Minnesota’s only playoff appearance in the last 17 years came with Jimmy Butler on the roster. The team would like to add another impact player of that caliber; could Ben Simmons be the answer?

The Timberwolves have been linked to Simmons as one of the teams pursuing him the most aggressively. Just because they had a change in their front office with Gershon Rosas being relieved of his duties does not mean they will stop pursuing Simmons. They believe they are the perfect team for him.

“(Sachin Gupta) absolutely is a fan of Ben Simmons. He was in Philadelphia when Ben Simmons first got there. I do think that overall, just the organization’s position is that Ben Simmons is a perfect fit for their roster for what they need and what Ben Simmons needs from a team around him. So I do think that they are going to continue to pursue Ben Simmons aggressively, I can’t say, you know, 100% that, you know, they’re in the driver’s seat, or it’s going to happen or anything like that. But I do know that the dismissal of Gersson Rosas has not poured any cold water on their pursuit of Simmons, they really think that he can be a difference-maker.”

Depending on the package that the Timberwolves send to the Philadelphia 76ers, they could have quite a core going forward. Towns and Edwards are likely off the table in trade negotiations.

Russell would likely have to be part of any offer to the Philadelphia 76ers, as they would need a point guard to replace Simmons.

D’Angelo Russell and Karl-Anthony Towns are very close, but sooner or later, winning has to take precedence. There is no doubting that the Minnesota Timberwolves would be a better team with Simmons taking the place of Russell in the starting lineup.
