The New York Knicks will once again have a new starting point guard this NBA season.

But, this time around, fans are very excited about the change. Eflrid Payton, who started a majority of the games for the team last season, left in free agency and signed with the Phoenix Suns.

The Knicks are is in much better shape at point guard heading into the 2021-22 season than they have been in years. Derrick Rose re-signed with the team in free agency after a very successful second stint with the organization following a trade from the Detroit Pistons.

He will be joined by plenty of new faces. Kemba Walker was also signed in free agency following a buyout from the Oklahoma City Thunder. Rookie Deuce McBride played excellent in the Las Vegas Summer League and it is hard to envision him not breaking into the rotation at some point during the season.

With so many options, many people wondered who would be the team’s starting point guard once the season rolled around. Head coach Tom Thibodeau put any questions to rest, saying Walker would be the starter.

This piggybacked on what Derrick Rose said, as he also shared that Kemba Walker was the Knicks’ starter. He said that his job is to fill in, not fight for a spot.

Rose will have an important role as the sixth man off the bench for the Knicks. It was a role he thrived in last season before being moved into the starting lineup in Game 3 of the team’s first-round playoff series with the Atlanta Hawks.

That bench role is something Thibodeau mentioned as well. Rose played extremely well alongside Immanuel Quickley and Alec Burks last season. Keeping that continuity will help the Knicks, as all three are back for a second season with the orange and blue.

Having interchangeable options is never a bad thing. It will be nice for the coaching staff to be able to turn to another player should someone be having an off night or be in foul trouble. Having multiple players you can rely upon on in crunch time will only make the New York Knicks that much more dangerous during the 2021-22 season.
