How This Trade Impacts San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs make their intentions known in this hypothetical deal with the Toronto Raptors. They have always said they will remain competitive and try to win as long as Gregg Popovich is the head coach and this move cements that.

Pascal Siakam can be the go-to player for the Spurs going forward. He is entering his prime at only 27-years old and has plenty of excellent basketball ahead of him. Siakam can step right into the starting power forward role that DeMar DeRozan departed from.

Siakam has made strides as a playmaker throughout his career, averaging a career-high 4.5 assists per game last season. He should be able to step right into the same role DeRozan had as a point-forward but with a more dynamic offensive game.

Siakam struggled from the 3-point line last season but has shown the ability to knock shots down from that distance. He could open things up even more for the offense than DeRozan did, who was a non-shooter.

To acquire someone of Siakam’s skill level will be costly. Parting ways with Dejounte Murray will be tough to stomach, but San Antonio selected another point guard, Josh Primo, with their first-round pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Primo was the youngest prospect in this year’s class but has great potential.

Thaddeus Young is one of their best trade chips and they cash it in on this deal. Surrendering an unprotected pick in any year is a risky proposition, but the Spurs should once again challenge for a playoff spot with Siakam in the fold.
