Does this trade make sense for the Dallas Mavericks?

If the Mavs want to move Kristaps Porzingis’ contract, I guess this trade would make sense, but there really is no need for Dallas to move a ton of their valuable pieces. Dorian Finney-Smith has consistently outplayed the value on his contract, Jalen Brunson is a growing young point guard that is only going to get better and Kristaps Porzingis can still be a key talent for them next to Luka Doncic.

Unless they are trying to free up immediate cap space to go after another superstar talent, there is no need for the Mavs to make this trade since they are still a growing team in the Western Conference. They are not necessarily a title contending team yet, but with Doncic and Porzingis, Dallas seems like they are one piece away.

Giving up on everything right now and throwing away some really key contributors for Andrew Wiggins and James Wiseman does not make much sense, even if both of those guys can provide some upside for the future. The Mavs are on the verge of winning right now and they really only need one other key All-Star, which is why getting rid of Porzingis now would be a mistake.

He really has not been bad next to Doncic per se, the Mavericks just need to find better ways to get him involved and change their game plan slightly to make him more of a threat with his size. New head coach Jason Kidd could very well look to do so, which is why the Mavs should wait at least one more year before making a decision on Porzingis’ future, especially since his value could increase.

The fact that Dorian Finney-Smith and Jalen Brunson are in the final years of their contracts is worrisome, especially since they will both likely see raises next offseason, but Dallas would be foolish to move both of them right now in this deal with Golden State.

They both could be on the move at the NBA trade deadline depending on how Dallas is doing, but they are two key secondary talents for the Mavericks and if they are gone, this team could be left with little talent outside of their two All-Star talents.
