Dallas Mavericks Target: Goran Dragic

Luka Doncic is not going anywhere anytime soon after signing a five-year, $207M max extension with the Dallas Mavericks, but right now, he is the only major contributor on this roster. Kristaps Porzingis has been very underwhelming in Dallas the last few seasons, which is why Dallas will likely look to add a different All-Star player in the future.

Their cap situation is a little complicated right now and the Dallas Mavericks may not look to add another All-Star this season, but going after Goran Dragic would certainly make Luka Doncic more comfortable and content. Both Goran Dragic and Doncic are Slovenian and they both played together on Team Slovenia in the Olympics this summer, coming up just short of winning a medal.

Ever since he was traded to the Toronto Raptors, there has been a lot of talk about Goran Dragic possibly being traded to the Dallas Mavericks, yet no formal trade offers have really materialized yet. The Mavericks need another solid, reliable point guard to play with Luka Doncic, which is why Dragic makes sense as a former All-Star.

Having Goran Dragic and Luka Doncic on the court together gives the Dallas Mavericks two main facilitators to play through, with guys like Tim Hardaway Jr., Dorian Finney-Smith, Maxi Kleber, and Kristaps Porzingis being around them. However, the question is whether or not they would want to take on all of Dragic’s $19.4M contract.

Dallas would put themselves in a better situation financially if the Raptors were to buy out Goran Dragic from his contract, and then the Dallas Mavericks were able to sign him, but this does not seem like a realistic option, right now. Toronto does not want to be tied down financially to Dragic’s contract, which is the main reason they will most likely look to move him.

With moveable contracts on their roster, the Mavericks should be able to get a deal done, should Toronto want to trade Goran Dragic to them.

Making Luka Doncic happy is a “must” for the Dallas Mavericks and since they do not have the means to add another All-Star right now, trading for a good friend of his in Goran Dragic definitely makes a lot of sense.
