How This Trade Impacts Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics have two young All-Stars as the foundation of their franchise in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. This trade would raise their ceiling to potentially becoming legitimate contenders in the Eastern Conference.
There are red flags to acquiring Kristaps Porzingis, but when he is playing well, he is a real difference-maker. Right now, the power forward spot is the shakiest on the roster and he would do a lot in shoring things up there.
He would provide the team with another excellent scoring option, helping take some pressure off of Tatum and Brown. He showed how dominant he can be during a stretch before the shutdown in 2020. If the Celtics can get that level of production, they will be difficult to beat.
Joining Porzingis is Trey Burke, a solid scoring point guard. He would provide good depth at the position should Marcus Smart take over starting point guard duties as it has been floated about this offseason.
The only real hold-up in this deal is if Brad Stevens would get the okay from management to surrender two more first-round picks. He has already traded one to move Kemba Walker’s contract. Would they allow him to trade picks in 2022 and 2024 to land someone with the red flags of Porzingis?

Parting with Al Horford, Dennis Schroder and Aaron Nesmith shouldn’t be an issue. But, there will be cause for concern unloading three first-round picks in your first offseason. Given the potential reward in such a deal, Boston should haggling draft compensation to one first-rounder or getting something back with Porzingis.
There are a lot of reasons the Celtics would do this trade; do the Mavericks have that as well? Let’s take a look at it from their perspective.
