Minnesota Timberwolves

Jarred Vanderbilt and Jordan McLaughlin re-signing with the Minnesota Timberwolves just a couple of days ago is not surprising news, as the Timberwolves wanted to bring back both of these young guys, but what is next for this organization?

The Timberwolves have a former #1 overall pick in Karl-Anthony Towns, last year’s #1 overall pick in Anthony Edwards, and a former #2 overall pick in D’Angelo Russell in their backcourt, but Minnesota is still not a threat in the Western Conference.

There has been a lot of talk about the Timberwolves potentially being the “leading team” in the “Ben Simmons Sweepstakes,” but at this point, it is really hard to tell what is going to happen with the All-Star 7-footer. Trading for Simmons certainly brings a lot of value to Minnesota, but assuming they do not trade for him, this Timberwolves team still has some major holes to fill.

Not only has their bench been horrid over the years, but overall, they have not really been a great defensive team either. There is not much overall value left in the free-agent market for the Timberwolves to be intrigued by, but they are currently sitting at 12 guaranteed contracts for the 2021-22 season, with Jaylen Nowell also being under-contract on a non-guaranteed deal.

They have some spots to add one or two more key bench players to their roster, which is why the Timberwolves may elect to target some more frontcourt help.

Outside of Karl-Anthony Towns and second-year forward Jaden McDaniels, the Timberwolves really do not have much depth behind their big men, which is why DeMarcus Cousins, Mike Scott, Jahlil Okafor, and D.J. Wilson could all be affordable options for Minnesota to pursue.

If Minnesota is going to better themselves during the 2021-22 season, they are not only going to have to be better defensively, but they need to give their star some more help.

Towns has done everything for this Timberwolves team over the years and if he continues to do so, he will continue to miss games with injuries, much like he did the last two seasons in Minnesota.

Bringing back Jarred Vanderbilt does help the Timberwolves frontcourt depth slightly, but adding one of the four guys above could definitely give them that extra body they need not only in practices and the locker room, but as a potential back-up option as well in case things go drastically wrong midseason.
