DeMarcus Cousins

The fall from grace that DeMarcus Cousins has had is quite saddening, especially seeing as he was arguably the best big man in the league from 2015-2016. During the 2017-18 season though, a season after he was traded from the Kings to the Pelicans to pair up with Anthony Davis, Cousins suffered a ruptured Achilles in his left leg that kept him out 357 days. 

After returning from his Achilles injury, Cousins found himself on a loaded Golden State Warriors roster, but then after not being 100% recovered and up-to-speed after his Achilles injury, DeMarcus Cousins suffered a torn left quad in the playoffs. He was able to “play” in the NBA Finals for the Warriors, but he was very inconsistent. 

Coming off two major leg injuries, the Lakers decided to give Cousins a shot for the 2019-20 season, but then during preseason workouts, the former All-Star seemed to bang knees with someone else and landed awkwardly.

It was later said that he had suffered a torn ACL in his left knee, meaning that “Boogie” Cousins had suffered his third significant left leg injury in a matter of three years.

Still, DeMarcus Cousins did not give up hope and worked his way back on the court with the Rockets to begin last season and he finished the year with the Clippers, who he actually looked somewhat decent for in limited minutes off-the-bench both in the regular season and in the playoffs. 

Given all of his accolades through the years and the fact that he is an experienced big man, it is shocking that Cousins has not worked his way on another roster, but it also makes sense why a team hasn’t given him a chance. At this point, Cousins is a major liability and teams really do not want to invest millions of dollars in a guy who could “break” at any moment.

Seeing as he did have success with the Clippers last season, I truly do think a team will give him a shot on either a 10-day contract or minimum contract near midseason this year, but his options are limited.

Not many teams will want to bring in a guy who has undergone three major injuries to the same leg, especially a center, but at the same time, DeMarcus Cousins is a former 4x All-Star and generational-type talent.
