The Cleveland Cavaliers have been rebuilding over the last few years, but one familiar face has remained on the roster from their championship contending years with LeBron James. That face would be Kevin Love.

Even though the Cavaliers have fully embraced their rebuilding process, they have not traded or worked out a buyout with Love. He has remained on the roster in a very limited role. Now, there are some who are calling for the two sides to figure out a way for Love to leave Cleveland.

One NBA executive spoke to NBA Analysis Network about Love’s current situation with the Cavs. He made it clear that the franchise should begin working on a buyout with Love.

“It’s the right thing to do. Kevin (Love) has wasted a few years of his career playing with a group that can’t contend, and he’s still capable of being a major impact piece elsewhere. The right thing to do for him for his loyalty to the franchise would be to work out a buyout and allow him to join a contender while he’s still capable of playing a big role.”

Love has struggled with injury issues over the last couple of years. He has also seen some of his minutes taken by younger players. If he were to work out a buyout with the Cavaliers, there is no question that a plethora of contenders would come calling about his services.

Among the expected teams with interest would be the Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Bulls, and even the New York Knicks. Love would still be a highly sought after player on the open market.

During the 2020-21 NBA season with the Cavaliers, Love ended up playing in and starting 25 games. He averaged 12.2 points per game to go along with 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. In addition to those numbers, Love shot 40.9 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 36.5 percent of his three-point attempts.

There is no question that Kevin Love could still contribute for a championship contender. He may not be the star that he once was, but coming off the bench he could still be a dominant force.

Will the Cavs consider pursuing a buyout with Kevin Love? Only time will tell, but it would definitely be a classy move. Some around the league are calling for it, and it will be interesting to see if anything happens.
