Brooklyn Nets

Seeing as the Brooklyn Nets are already roughly $40M over the tax line for the 2021-22 season, it seems unlikely that they would want to go after a guy like Eric Gordon, who is owed $18.2M this upcoming season and is under contract long-term, but they do have a way to possibly add him to their rotation.

Brooklyn has flirted with the idea of trading away DeAndre Jordan, who is owed $9.8M this upcoming season, but the other players on the Nets do like having him around, specifically Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Hypothetically, if they were to move Jordan and possibly another small contract, they would be able to make a trade for Gordon work, but they would still be absorbing a large salary and see their taxes for the 2021-22 season increase.

This may not be something GM Sean Marks wants to do though, so making another big move via trade may not be an option for the Nets unless they are able to use their $11.5M trade exception from signing-and-trading away Spencer Dinwiddie to the Wizards this offseason.

Even then though, the Nets would likely target a player on a one-year contract with said TPE, that way they would not be tied down long-term to another large contract since Durant, Harden and Irving are all being paid a lot of money. However, trading for Gordon definitely has its advantages for the Nets.

He is an excellent bench presence and would be a guy they can turn to for instant production. Not to mention, Gordon has a positive history with James Harden from their time with the Rockets, so pairing these two guys back up on and off-the-court could make sense for the Nets. If Houston is willing to take on DeAndre Jordan’s contract, this trade could be beneficial to Brooklyn, but they would be taking back a lot of money in taxes by acquiring Eric Gordon.
