While some teams put together some really great offseasons that better their chances of possibly winning an NBA championship, other teams tend to decline during the offseason and worsen their chances of winning a championship in the near future.

Then you have teams like the Portland Trail Blazers, who not only did not do anything to help themselves, but they managed to lose more of the trust from Damian Lillard, their best player. 

Since being drafted 6th overall in 2012, Lillard has built himself into a real MVP candidate in this league and a year-by-year All-NBA performer, but Portland has not been able to get him the help he needs and deserves to contend for a title.

The Trail Blazers came close to reaching the NBA Finals in 2019, reaching their first Western Conference Finals since 2000, but they got swept by the Golden State Warriors, a team that was a lot better than them and stood no chance of losing to Portland.

Damian Lillard wants to win and he would like to do so in Portland with the Blazers, but at this point, there is very little his organization can do. They are right at the tax line and well above the salary cap, so there is limited room for them to bring in another impactful player and in terms of trading for another key talent, the Portland Trail Blazers do not really have any assets other than Lillard and McCollum.

Jusef Nurkic, Robert Covington and Norman Powell are all above-average players who can definitely be secondary talents on a containing team, but the Blazers simply do not have the firepower on either end of the court to put them in the same category with the likes of the Suns, Lakers, Clippers and even the Warriors (when healthy) in the Western Conference.

Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum can only do so much, which is why this front-office has their work cut out for them in terms of adding more overall talent.

I am just going to say it… it seems very likely that Damian Lillard could end up being on the move following the 2021-22 season and there may not be much Neil Olshey and the Portland front-office can do.

They have screwed up time-and-time again and with virtually no All-Star talents being available league-wide, there really are not many guys the Trail Blazers can bring in via a trade and become immediate contenders, especially given their financial situation as well, so take these following names with a grain of salt as potential trade targets to get Lillard the help “he needs!”
