The Dallas Mavericks’ offseason got off to a surprising start. Franchise stalwarts Donnie Nelson and Rick Carlisle both parted ways with the organization. Nelson had been with the Mavericks for 24 years in multiple roles, while Carlisle was the head coach for 13 NBA seasons.
Nico Harrison, who is taking over as general manager, and Jason Kidd, who is taking over as head coach, will have some huge shoes to fill with the Mavericks. Dallas is hoping the high regard in which players hold them will translate to success on the court.
The offseason, in regards to player movement, started slowly for Dallas. They did not have a pick in the 2021 NBA Draft but got to work shaping the roster after that.
The first move they did was trading Josh Richardson to the Boston Celtics. Richardson opted into his $11.6 million player option and was subsequently traded to Boston, who used the remaining portion of their trade exception to acquire him. Center Moses Brown, whom the Celtics acquired earlier in the offseason from the Oklahoma City Thunder, was sent to Dallas as well.
The Mavericks did exercise the option they had on center Willie Cauley-Stein, which was worth $4.1 million. They were also able to re-sign Tim Hardaway Jr., who was receiving some interest around the league, to a four-year, $74 million deal.
Two free agents from outside the team, Sterling Brown and Reggie Bullock were also added. Brown signed a two-year, $6.2 million deal while Bullock signed a three-year, $30.5 million deal.

While they did upgrade the wings, there is another player that they could still target to help there; Buddy Hield of the Sacramento Kings. Hield was almost traded to the Los Angeles Lakers before the draft, but the deal fell through and he is still with the Kings.
To avoid all of that awkwardness, it is likely a matter of when, not if, Hield will be on the move this offseason. Dallas should take advantage and get in on the Hield trade talks. Here are three reasons why the Mavericks should seriously consider a Hield trade.
