The San Antonio Spurs agreed to a sign-and-trade deal revolving around former NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan, sending the former All-Star to the Chicago Bulls on a new three-year, $85M deal, and in the process, the Spurs received Thaddeus Young, Al-Farouq Aminu, a future first-round pick and two second-round picks from the Bulls.

Thad Young has now been in the NBA for 14 seasons and he is coming off a very strong year in Chicago. During the 2020-21 season, Young averaged 12.1 points, 6.2 rebounds, 4.3 assists and shot 55.9% from the floor, making him a versatile big man who can do a lot of things to help his team win.

With them losing DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Gay and Patty Mills in NBA free agency, the San Antonio Spurs look to be heading in a new direction centered around their young core. This could very well mean that they will look to move not only Al-Farouq Aminu, but Thad Young as well.

There are a handful of teams out there looking for veteran frontcourt talents that can contribute immediately and one of those teams is the Minnesota Timberwolves. With Karl-Anthony Towns at the center position and both D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards in their backcourt, the Timberwolves have a solid foundation in place, but they need more talent on their team to begin winning games.

It has been mentioned in trade rumors earlier in the NBA offseason that Minnesota had interest in Danilo Gallinari of the Hawks and inquired about the availability of Lauri Markkanen in a potential sign-and-trade deal with Chicago, but neither of these two interests held any weight in trade talks. As a result, they could turn their attention to a guy like Young, who the Spurs most likely will be willing to move.

It is unlikely that San Antonio could get a first-round pick for Thad Young, but what exactly could Minnesota offer them that would be of value to a rebuilding franchise like the Spurs? Let’s take a look at a trade proposal that would send Young to Minnesota, giving them some much needed depth in their frontcourt.
