The Toronto Raptors have been known to be one of the best franchises in the NBA over the last several years, winning a title during the 2018-19 season, but they have seemed to take a major step back over the last year or so. Not only did they finish with their worst record since the 2011-12 season this past year, but they also made a very poor decision holding onto Kyle Lowry at the NBA trade deadline during the 2020-21 season.

At the deadline, Toronto had multiple offers for the veteran point guard and could have easily sent him to the Heat, 76ers or Lakers, but they decided to keep Lowry. After making this decision, the Raptors went 10-19 to finish the year with a 27-45 record. The 2020-21 season was a complete loss for this franchise and in free agency, they wound up losing Lowry anyways to the Miami Heat.

Miami and Toronto agreed on a sign-and-trade deal involving 6x All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry going to South Beach and both Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa heading to the Raptors. Achiuwa will be a decent addition to their frontcourt, but Dragic will likely be on the move once again.

There is a possibility that the Raptors could look to buy him out of his $19.4M contract, but it is more likely that they will look to get a third team involved in this sign-and-trade deal before it becomes official, that way they do not have to take on Goran Dragic’s salary for the 2021-22 season. Could the team they look to move Dragic to be the Dallas Mavericks?

Reports have surfaced about Dragic and the Mavs showing interest in each other and the Slovenian guard could very much want to go to Dallas so he can play with fellow Slovenian Luka Doncic. This has become a key trade rumor to watch around the NBA.

Whether or not the Mavericks would want to take on his large one-year contract is a big question, but let’s take a look at what a trade for Goran Dragic could look like between the Raptors and Mavericks.
