San Antonio Spurs
It is a long-running joke that Greg Popovich will do anything to get international players on the San Antonio Spurs. After all, he’s had loads of success with guys like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli having key roles on the team.
While it’s funny to point out Popovich’s affinity for international players, Markkanen is one that could be perfect for what the Spurs are looking for at the power forward position.
Due to the team’s lack of firepower at power forward — following the buy-out of LaMarcus Aldridge — DeMar DeRozan was forced into a small-ball power forward role this season. DeRozan is expected to sign elsewhere in free agency, which leaves the Spurs searching for a replacement.
Markkanen would be a viable signing for the Spurs as he could start at power forward or play as a center in lineups that Popovich wants five shooters on the floor.
