The Phoenix Suns lost in the NBA Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks in six games, but they are wasting little time in upgrading and adding depth to their roster. Hours before the 2021 NBA Draft was set to begin, they agreed in principle to a trade with the Brooklyn Nets for shooting guard Landry Shamet.
The Suns acquired Shamet from the Nets in exchange for Jevon Carter and the No. 29 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN shared the tweet on his Twitter account.
This is already the third time Shamet will have been traded in his career as he will be playing for his fourth team in as many seasons. He was selected 26th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers in 2018 and was part of the Tobias Harris blockbuster deal at that season’s deadline. He spent the remainder of that season and the 2019-20 season with the LA Clippers before being traded to the Nets during the 2020 offseason.
Carter was a second-round pick of the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018 out of West Virginia. He was traded to the Suns during the 2019 offseason and signed a multi-year extension with the Suns worth $11.5 million.
This trade was mostly about money for the Suns, who gave themselves a little more flexibility swapping out nearly $6 million for the just under $4 million Shamet will make. The Nets get a second first-round pick in this year’s draft to try and land an established player to add more depth to their roster.
How did both teams do in this trade? Let us take an in-depth look and hand out some grades for the trade.
