Dallas Mavericks

The three teams that pursued him at the NBA trade deadline could once again look to go after Lowry in free agency, but so could the Dallas Mavericks, who have a bit of cap space and the need for an All-Star, difference-making player. Luka Doncic is a superstar talent in this league and is going to continue to get better, but in order for the Mavs to potentially contend for a championship over the next few years, they will need another reliable contributor next to Doncic.

With Tim Hardaway Jr. also being a free agent and Dallas wanting to bring him back, the Mavericks could realistically lok to pull off a sign-and-trade for Kyle Lowry this offseason. They are currently close to $21M under the salary cap for next season, but they could potentially free up more cap space by having Josh Richardson ($11.62M) opt out of his player option or finding a way to trade Dwight Powell ($11.08M).

Adding Kyle Lowry to their roster definitely makes sense and not only would they benefit by doing so talent-wise, but the Mavericks would instantly make themselves a true contender in the Western Conference with a trio of Doncic, Lowry and Porzingis.

The only problem with going after Lowry in a sign-and-trade is that they would hard cap themselves for the 2021-22 season. Freeing up the necessary cap space to sign Lowry outright could definitely be the smart move for the Mavericks to make, especially since they can go over the salary cap to bring back Tim Hardaway Jr. should they choose to do so.

The Mavericks need to make some kind of a move this offseason because they need to get Luke Doncic more help. Originally, there were thoughts that Kristaps Porzingis could be moved for another high-level talent, but this is simply not the case anymore. No team wants to trade for Porzingis at this time, which is why adding talent around him and Doncic is what the Mavericks need to do this offseason.
