Why The New York Knicks Would Do A Russell Westbrook Deal

The New York Knicks have a lot of cap space again. If they are unable to land any free agents, using that space to absorb Russell Westbrook’s deal, with draft compensation hopefully attached to it, would be a smart business move.

On the court, the Knicks do still have a huge need for a point guard. Westbrook would be a massive upgrade at the position over Elfrid Payton, who started for a majority of the 2020-21 season before being removed from the rotation during the team’s first-round playoff exit.

Westbrook’s relentless attacking of the rim is exactly what Tom Thibodeau is looking for from his point guards. That puts pressure on opposing teams to protect the rim, which opens up looks for players on the wing. New York took full advantage of that last season, as they funneled 3-point shots to the corners. While he is not a great shooter, Westbrook still would be an improvement on Payton in that regard.

There would also be a hope that Westbrook’s efficiency could improve with a better supporting cast. Julius Randle showed that he is more than capable of carrying the offensive load, winning the Most Improved Player award for the 2020-21 season. RJ Barrett took a huge second-year leap and has the looks of a go-to scorer as well. Not having to be relied upon as the sole source of offensive production, whether it is shooting the ball or playmaking, should help Westbrook improve on his efficiency numbers.

Despite being 32 with some of his athleticism beginning to wane, Russell Westbrook still stuffed the stat sheet, averaging 22.2 points, 11.7 assists and 11.5 rebounds per game, the fourth time in his career that he averaged a triple-double for a season.

Adding that kind of production to an already strong team would make the New York Knicks that much more of a threat in the Eastern Conference.
