Dallas Mavericks Receive: G Kyle Lowry
Toronto Raptors Receive: C Dwight Powell, G Josh Richardson (Player Option), DAL 2022 2nd Round Pick, DAL 2024 1st Round Pick (Top-5 Protected)

This may not seem like a trade that works out in Toronto’s favor, but at the end of the day, Kyle Lowry is an unrestricted free agent and can sign wherever he wants. They really are not in the “driver’s seat” to be demanding what they get in return, which is why they may have to settle with what Dallas will give up.

The best part about this situation for the Mavericks is that if Kyle Lowry wants to go to Dallas in free agency, they will not have to offer up a ton of valuable assets to Toronto to get him.

In order to make this sign-and-trade work, they would not only have to give Lowry the money that he wants, but they will have to match this money with current contracts, which is why Dwight Powell, Josh Richardson, Maxi Kleber and Willie Cauley-Stein are all up for discussion to be traded on Dallas’ end of things.

In this trade scenario, both Powell and Richardson, assuming he opts into his contract, would be going to Toronto, along with a second-round pick in next year’s draft and a protected 2024 first-round pick. The Raptors do have a need for perimeter scoring and could use another big man, which is why these two guys could be of value to them.

Not to mention, Josh Richardson would be entering the final year of his contract and Dwight Powell is only under contract through the 2022-23 season, so Toronto would not be tied down to these guys long-term if they do not want to be.

Kyle Lowry has always been one of the more underrated two-way guards in the league and he has proven himself to be a championship-level point guard.

Taking pressure off of Luke Doncic and allowing him to thrive more as an individual scorer instead of a primary ball-handler could be extremely beneficial to the Dallas Mavericks, hence why they could want to pursue Lowry in free agency.

A sign-and-trade seems like the only likely way that the Mavericks can add Lowry to their roster this offseason, especially if they want to have any shot at bringing back Tim Hardaway Jr. as well. Now, let’s take a look at if this sign-and-trade makes sense for both the Dallas Mavericks and the Toronto Raptors.
