Does this trade make sense for the Boston Celtics?

Right now, the Boston Celtics are still looking for ways to surround Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with more talent and rightfully so. Outside of their starting unit last year, the Celtics really did not receive much production and their bench was one of the worst in the league in terms of scoring output.

Boston lost in the first-round of the playoffs to the Brooklyn Nets not only because the Nets were a much more talented team, but because they simply did not have the firepower offensively to keep up with the likes of Durant and Irving. Tatum and Brown are fantastic players and proven All-Star talents, but this team is still missing that third big-time player to set them over the edge from the rest of the teams in the Eastern Conference.

Bradley Beal is the kind of player they are missing and adding him to their roster would make the Boston Celtics an instant favorite to win the Eastern Conference during the 2021-22 season next to the Brooklyn Nets. A trio of Beal, Brown and Tatum would be very hard to stop offensively and arguably create one of the best scoring units in the entire league.

While they would have to figure out things in terms of their backcourt since Marcus Smart is their only experienced guard, they would still have Payton Pritchard, who put together a solid rookie season last year, and they could pursue veteran guards who are looking to “chase rings.” Guys like Patty Mills, Austin Rivers, Avery Bradley and Raul Neto all may be willing to take less money to join this Celtics team if they were to acquire Bradley Beal.

The only real problem with this trade from the Celtics point of view is the fact that they would be giving up all of their draft capital over the next several years to try and win now. Long-term, this is definitely a problem since they would not be able to continue building depth with a young core, but do they really need to do so?

Jayson Tatum is only 23-years-old, Jaylen Brown is only 24-years-old and only Al Horford and Tristan Thompson are 30-years-old or older on this roster. Boston already has enough young talents where trading away multiple first-round picks would not really hurt them, especially if they got a promise from Beal that he would sign a 3-4 year extension with them upon being traded to Boston.

Acquiring Bradley Beal would be a fantastic move for the Boston Celtics to make this offseason, but trying to convince the Wizards to trade him will be difficult. They have given no indications that they want to trade their superstar shooting guard and it could take more than what was offered above to convince Washington to let him go.
