Does this trade make sense for the Golden State Warriors?
Adding Collin Sexton gives the Warriors more talent to contend for a title, but at what cost? Golden State is rumored to be interested in trading both of their lottery picks (Picks #7 and #14) in order to acquire an established, high-level talent, but is Collin Sexton the player they had in mind?
With one year left on his rookie deal, Sexton would definitely not be in the Warriors’ long-term plans unless they were planning to move on from Andrew Wiggins or one of their other larger contracts. Steph Curry is about to get another significant contract extension and the Warriors are already $60M+ over the salary cap, so it just seems foolish that they would acquire yet another player who needs a big contract.
Talent-wise, Collin Sexton would fit in perfectly in Golden State, but they just do not have the ability to keep him long-term on a high paying contract like he is about to receive over the next year or so. Plus, trading away Jordan Poole and Kevon Looney could hurt the Warriors second-unit.
Poole stepped up big-time this past season and really emerged as a key offensive talent for the Warriors, averaging 12.0 points, 1.9 assist and shooting 35.1% from three-point range.

Kevon Looney may not have the stats to prove his value to the Warriors, but he really is like their “glue guy” on both ends of the floor. He does a lot of the little things to help Golden State win games, which is why getting rid of him could be detrimental to their overall success.
Overall, this trade just does not seem too logical for the Golden State Warriors because of the situation they are in. Going after a player with one year remaining on his contract that can help contribute to a championship contending team is definitely in play for the Warriors this offseason, but Sexton does not seem like that kind of player.
