The New York Knicks have been rumored to be going after a handful of talents this NBA offseason given their nearly $60M in cap space and the latest name to be of interest to them is Collin Sexton from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Sexton has arguably been the Cavs’ best talent over the years, so why would they want to trade him?
Cleveland is kind of stuck as a franchise right now not only because they are far away from being anything special, but because they are pretty much tied down financially. While it looks like they are fine on cap space, as they have roughly $18M in cap space entering the offseason, this money will be gone quickly because Jarrett Allen is a free agent this offseason.
The 23-year-old center came to Cleveland as part of the James Harden to Brooklyn trade this past January and since then, he has been a focal point for the Cavaliers on both ends of the court. They really like the production he gave them and as a result, they will be looking to sign him to a long-term deal.
Not only would this take up pretty much all of the cap space the Cavs have right now, but this would also make things difficult for them to sign Sexton long-term. Collin Sexton is entering the final year of his rookie contract and is up for an extension this summer before becoming a restricted free agent next offseason.

Trading him now could bring immediate value to the Cleveland Cavaliers and help them try to sort out their cap situation, especially with Kevin Love under contract through the 2022-23 season with $60.2M still left on his contract.
The Cavaliers have made Sexton “very available” in trade talks recently, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic, and the New York Knicks are a team that are interested in the young guard. New York is expected to go after a point guard this offseason, with them being linked to Lonzo Ball, Kyle Lowry and others, which is why they could settle things early on near the draft and trade for Collin Sexton.
With this said, let’s take a look at what this trade between the Cleveland Cavaliers and New York Knicks could look like involving Collin Sexton.
