The Houston Rockets went 17-55 in the 2020-21 regular season. They finished the season with the worst record in the league but needed some luck during the NBA Draft Lottery.

Had their pick dropped outside of the top-four, it would have been sent to the Oklahoma City Thunder. Luckily for them, they landed the No. 2 pick draft and now will have the opportunity to select one of the top prospects in this year’s class.

Several prospects will be in the running for the first overall selection, which is owned by the Detroit Pistons. Cade Cunningham is the expected No. 1 overall pick right now, but at least four other prospects are considered to be in the mix as well, based on rumors spreading around the NBA.

The Rockets are in an excellent spot with the second overall selection, and at this time, a player is emerging as their target; Jalen Green.

“‘Multiple people around the league love the idea of Green fitting in Houston, mainly because of the potential for stardom down the line and the backcourt fit with Kevin Porter Jr.,” wrote Kelly Iko of The Athletic.”

The Rockets organization needs a star to build around after James Harden pushed for a trade out of town and landed with the Brooklyn Nets. If Green has the potential to reach that level of stardom, the Houston Rockets will gladly hand the card in with his name on it.

At this point in their rebuild, Houston is in asset collection mode. They will take the best player available in their eyes and worry about the fit later on. In addition to Cunningham and Green, Evan Mobley, Jalen Suggs and Jonathan Kuminga are other names to watch for in the top five.

Houston will have two more chances in the first round to add more talent to their roster as they also own the No. 23 and 24 overall picks courtesy of the Portland Trail Blazers and Milwaukee Bucks, respectively.
