The Houston Rockets made some big decisions over the last year or so and now, they find themselves in the middle of a rebuilding process. The James Harden era in Houston brought a lot of joy to this fanbase and a lot to cheer for, but they were never able to break through and make it to the NBA Finals.
Now, the Rockets attention is turned onto the next generation and what they could potentially turn out to be. Christian Wood, Jae’Sean Tate, Kevin Porter Jr. and Kenyon Martin Jr. make up a very promising looking young core that Houston intends to build with and around over the next several years.
With veterans like Eric Gordon, John Wall and D.J. Augustin, it seems very likely that the Rockets will be looking to make some trades this offseason, but could they entertain the idea of potentially grabbing the #1 overall pick?
The Rockets do own the second pick in this year’s draft, but if they want Cade Cunningham to be their point guard of the future, they will have to make a trade with the Pistons for the 1st overall pick.

Detroit obviously is thrilled that they have the #1 overall pick and while they will likely hold onto it, there have been some discussions about them hearing out other teams and their trade proposals for possibly moving up. The Pistons are very high on not only Cunningham, but Jalen Green and Evan Mobley as well.
If they feel like Green or Mobley are a better long-term fit for them, then trading the #1 overall pick is not that bad of an idea, but they have to ensure that they can remain inside the Top-3 to draft one of these other guys.
The Rockets do own the 2nd overall pick and they do own a ton of future draft assets as well, so could they possibly put together a trade package to move up one spot and draft what is said to be the best talent in this year’s draft? Let’s take a look at a possible trade proposal by the Houston Rockets that would land them the #1 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, presumably to draft Cade Cunningham.
