Oklahoma City Thunder trading Kemba Walker is ‘imminent’

The Oklahoma City Thunder pulled off the first trade of the offseason with the Boston Celtics. Oklahoma City acquired point guard Kemba Walker, a 2021 first-round pick and 2025 second-round pick in exchange for Al Horford, Moses Brown and a 2023 second-round pick.

Sam Presti continues to add to his treasure trove of draft picks, as he somehow acquired another first-round draft pick despite sending his undesirable contract in Horford out of town in the deal.

While Walker was hampered at the start of the 2020-21 season by a knee operation in the offseason, he started picking things up once he knocked the rust off. However, his poor postseason performance in the first round against the Brooklyn Nets essentially booked his ticket out of Boston.

With the Thunder, he would provide much-needed veteran experience for a very young team. He would take some playmaking and scoring pressure off of rising star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as well. But, Walker does not sound like he will be long for Oklahoma City.

According to Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News, there is a chance Walker never even suits up for the Thunder.

“A league source says a Kemba Walker trade is imminent, though it is unclear whether the trade will occur before or after the beginning of the 2021-22 NBA season.”

Given where Oklahoma City is in their rebuild, this does make sense. Alas, which teams would give up assets for Walker at this point?

Several teams are looking at point guard help this offseason, such as the Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Miami Heat and LA Clippers. Although it would seem those teams undoubtedly have other plans at point guard, otherwise they would have traded for Walker themselves along with the first-round draft pick.

A trade for Walker seems to likely come closer to the 2021-22 season as teams will see how their offseason shook out. If the trade market for Walker were robust, he wouldn’t have ended up in what looks like a salary dump trade for the Thunder.
