G Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland – VCU
One guy that had NBA scouts and executives talking up a storm at the combine was Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland from Virginia Commonwealth University. Coming into the combine, Hyland was projected to be a second-round pick, but now, there is talk about him potentially finding his way into the 20-30 range in the draft!
During the initial measurement days, Nah’Shon Hyland measured 6’3.5” with shoes on with a 6’9.25” wingspan, which is definitely above-average for his size and position, but it was his lane agility time that stood out amongst other guards. He led all guards at the combine in lane agility time at 10.53 seconds and he showed his quickness on display during Day 1 of the scrimmages.
“Bones” Hyland quickly caught the attention of everybody during the first scrimmage at the 2021 NBA Draft Combine when he recorded 17 points on 7-11 shooting, 3-5 shooting from deep, and added 6 rebounds, 4 assists to his name as well. He also recorded a steal and 2 blocks on the defensive-end of the court as well, which had a ton of scouts talking about his ability to be an all-around playmaker at the next level.
In fact, one NBA scout told NBA Analysis Network that he was “extremely impressed” with Hyland’s showing in this scrimmage and that he had played himself into the conversation for being selected in the first-round.
Not many people knew about Nah’Shon Hyland since he played at VCU and not in the “Power 5,” but people definitely know about him now after what he did at the combine! Being about a 6’4” guard that can play on or off-the-ball is definitely intriguing for franchises around the league and with him making a difference on both ends of the court in the scrimmage at the combine, Hyland is a guy that could keep getting better leading up to the draft.
Back in the 2017 NBA Draft, Donovan Mitchell was a guy that was not thought to be one of the top prospects in the draft, but after the combine and his pre-draft workouts, he shot up draft boards, ending up as the 13th pick in that draft. Now, Mitchell is a 2x All-Star and has continued to grow into one of the superstars of the league at just 24-years-old.

I see a very similar path for Nah’Shon Hyland coming here, especially given how well he played at the NBA Draft Combine. Teams are going to absolutely fall in love with his pure scoring abilities and skill to make those around him better when they get him in for pre-draft workouts, which is why “Bones” could end up being one of the guys we look back on in a couple of years from this draft class and wondering why he did not go higher than where he was drafted.
