Why The Celtics Should Absolutely Pull The Trigger On This Trade
So let’s dive a little deeper into this trade for the Celtics. Damian Lillard coming to Boston is the kind of impact change that Brad Stevens could want to make. He would change the dynamic of the team.
Jaylen Brown is a great player and no one will debate that statement. He averaged 24.7 points per game to go along with 6.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 1.2 steals. Those numbers show his improved game, but is he worth passing up on a guard like Lillard who can take over a game and is one of the best in clutch moments?
Jayson Tatum and Brown are very similar players. That has actually been a weakness while also being a strength for the Celtics. Lillard would provide Tatum with a completely different skill-set to play with, which could take Tatum’s game to the next level as well.
In addition to giving up Brown, the Celtics would also be parting ways with Marcus Smart and Aaron Nesmith. Both players were valuable role pieces for Boston. However, neither one of those players would be worth passing up a talent like Lillard to hold onto.
Adding in three first-round picks is no issue for Boston either. The young talent that they would get with those picks would ideally all be late first-round selections anyway. No rookie they got with those selections would make a major impact for them right off the bat to impact their championships odds.
Lillard is the missing piece that Tatum and the Celtics need. Adding him would also help Boston change the core that simply has not worked over the last few years. This is a trade that Boston should pursue if they have the chance.
