1. His Offensive Game Has Huge Potential
We’ve talked about Davion Mitchell’s defense a lot, but he is a more than capable scorer as well. While he will be better known for his defensive ability early on in his career, the Pacers would be getting a guy who can come in, create his own shot, and knock down the spot-up perimeter shot.
During the 2020-21 college season, Mitchell shot 44.7 percent from the three-point line. That number was way up from the 32.4 percent he shot back in 2019-20. Mitchell’s hard work payed off, and he has improved his offensive game in general leaps and bounds throughout his collegiate career.
If the Pacers were to find a way to select him, Mitchell would continue working hard on his offensive game. Indiana would not be asking him to come in and score 20 points per game as a rookie, but he could chip in 10 to 12 points per game right off the bat.
Mitchell scored 14 points per game last year with the Baylor Bears, which was up from 9.9 points per game the year previous. He went from being a borderline good player, to being one of the breakout stars of the eventual National Champions. The Pacers would be getting a guy who has become a dangerous three-point threat, but can also handle the ball, get to the rim, and create open looks for his teammates.
This is simply the perfect fit for the Pacers. They may not have the assets to make a move up far enough in the 2021 NBA Draft to get him, but Pritchard and company should definitely look into this option.
