3. The Pacers Need More Perimeter Defense
While most of the criticism for the Pacers from this past season was placed on first-year head coach Nate Bjorkgren, the team’s perimeter defense was a glaring hole. On the perimeter, Malcolm Brogdon struggled to stay in front of opposing guards. Adding a guy like Davion Mitchell would help improve that weakness.
Mitchell was a lockdown defender at Baylor and that was showcased during the NCAA Tournament. Entering the NBA, most young players focus on playing hard defense and let their offense come to them. The Pacers could see Mitchell take on a big role on both ends of the court.
Having a guard who can handle an opposing team’s best guard would fill a major need. Mitchell could play either point guard or shooting guard, as can Caris LeVert.
Indiana has to improve their defense if they want to become a serious contender again. The front office has acknowledged that fact, but they need a roster that can carry out their goal of improving on that end of the floor. Trading up to select Mitchell would show that they are serious about it.
Granted, there are other ways the Pacers could look to improve their defense. But, getting an elite young talent who could immediately take on a huge defensive role would be a wise decision.
