REPORT: Lakers expected to have interest in signing Carmelo Anthony

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a pivotal offseason as they look to add more talent around LeBron James and Anthony Davis. After being eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, it is obvious that the supporting cast just isn’t good enough. Could the Lakers consider pursuing veteran free agent Carmelo Anthony?

Rumors have been swirling that the Lakers will look to move on from Kyle Kuzma this offseason. That isn’t much of a surprise, but they could target Anthony to replace him.

NBA Analysis Network spoke to a source that stated that the Lakers are expected to pursue Anthony in free agency.

The source mentioned that the friendship between James and Anthony would help this move come to fruition. Anthony isn’t the superstar that he once was, but he still makes a major positive impact on a game. He can shoot the three-ball at a high level and would be a much more consistent role player than Kuzma has been.

During the 2020-21 NBA season with the Portland Trail Blazers, Anthony ended up averaging 13.4 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game. He shot 42.1 percent from the floor overall and knocked down 40.9 percent of his three-point attempts. Those numbers show why the Lakers would have interest in him.

James and Davis struggled with injuries throughout the majority of the season this year. When they were out, they didn’t have a leader step up and take control of the team. Anthony could absolutely assume that role when called upon.

At 37 years of age, Carmelo Anthony would welcome a chance to compete for a ring. With the Lakers, he would have that opportunity. He might have to take a bit of a pay-cut to sign with L.A., but once again, his friendship with James could convince him to make that move to join a title contender.

Expect to hear quite a few rumors surrounding the Lakers in the coming weeks. Anthony may not end up landing with the Lakers, but they are expected to have interest. This is something to keep an eye on with the offseason right around the corner.
