Why This Trade Is Perfect For The Miami Heat
Kristaps Porzingis is exactly the kind of player that the Heat need to bring in this offseason. Not because they need another big man, but because they need a guy who can score anytime he touches the ball.
Far too often, opposing defenses were able to key in on stopping Jimmy Butler. Bam Adebayo is a great player, but he cannot be a go-to scorer every time down the floor. Tyler Herro has the potential to become that kind of threat, but he has not proven that he can be consistent so far.
If the Heat were able to pull off this trade with the Mavs, they would be getting a legitimate No. 2 scoring option. Some nights, they might just be getting a No. 1 scoring option, which Porzingis has proven he can be throughout his career. Miami would not need him to stuff the stat sheet with rebounds or rim protection, they would simply be making this trade to add offensive firepower.
Granted, the Heat could also benefit from adding another dynamic guard like they tried to do with the trade to acquire Victor Oladipo. That didn’t pan out, but they could look to improve their back-court.
Should they choose to simply look at talent and scoring ability, Porzingis might be the best player available. He may have struggled with some consistency issues in the playoffs for Dallas, but he still had a great season. Miami should absolutely get involved in trade talks for Porzingis if the Mavs make him available, and this deal would make perfect sense for Pat Riley and company.
