What to expect from the Memphis Grizzlies in the offseason?

While they are just a few pieces away from being something special in the Western Conference, this offseason does not seem like the right time for Memphis to begin switching things up. They have exceeded expectations placed on them over the last two seasons and with a plethora of young talents plus a strong core, there is really no reason for them to tear things down in order to add some All-Star talents to the roster.

Ja Morant is going to be an All-Star very soon and both Dillon Brooks and Jaren Jackson Jr. have the potential to grow into very strong two-way threats for Memphis, so there really is no need to be aggressive this offseason.

Keeping the cap room that they have this offseason is going to be essential for them if they are to retain guys like Kyle Anderson, Jaren Jackson Jr. and others after the 2021-22 season when their contracts expire. Then with a contract-extension coming up for Ja Morant, the worst situation the Grizzlies can put themselves in would be hard capping themselves.

Keeping salary space and controlling their future needs to be the two main focuses of this organization heading into the offseason because right now, they are in a very good spot in the NBA. Memphis may not be on the same level as teams like the Nets, 76ers and Lakers where they are fighting for a championship, but sooner or later, the Grizzlies could easily turn themselves into a team like the Jazz or Suns, two teams that primarily built their team from the draft.

In his first two seasons as head coach, Taylor Jenkins has posted a 72-73 head coaching record, which does not look ideal, but with a young team like the Grizzlies, he has done a fantastic job. Patience is hard to come by in today’s NBA, but if Memphis is able to continue developing their current talents, they will be able to turn themselves into one of the better teams in the league.
