Boston Celtics Receive: G Collin Sexton

Cleveland Cavaliers Receive: F Aaron Nesmith, C Robert Williams III, 2021 first-round pick (16th overall pick)

It isn’t definite that the Cavaliers are going to move on from Collin Sexton this offseason. But if they do, they’ll need to be given an offer that gives them youth and possible assets in the 2021 NBA Draft. The trade begins with Sexton going to the Celtics in exchange for Aaron Nesmith and Robert Williams. Boston would also include their first-round selection in the 2021 NBA Draft, which is the 16th overall pick.

Sexton just completed the third year of his rookie deal and is eligible to sign his max extension in 2022. Seeing that Sexton just had the best year of his career in 2020-2021, the former eighth-overall pick is going to want an extension sooner rather than later. So whatever team acquires Sexton better be prepared to begin contract discussions with him immediately.

Both Nesmith and Williams are also on their rookie deals with the Celtics, and Williams is eligible for his max extension in 2022, much like Sexton. Unlike Sexton though, Williams hasn’t shown enough up to this point to garner the max extension yet. In light of that, Williams is going to be extra-motivated in the upcoming season to prove his worth in the NBA.

Let’s take a look at whether this NBA trade scenario centered around Collin Sexton would make sense for both the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers.
