San Antonio Spurs Receive: C/F Domantas Sabonis

Indiana Pacers Receive: G Lonnie Walker IV, C Jakob Poeltl, 2022 first-round pick (top-10 protected) and 2024 first-round pick (top-three protected)

This is a rather simple NBA trade scenario. The clear focus would be Domantas Sabonis being sent to the San Antonio Spurs and would be the lone player being included going to them. The Spurs would send Lonnie Walker IV and Jakob Poeltl with a pair of protected first-round picks to the Indiana Pacers.

Domantas Sabonis played on the first-year of a four-year, $74.9 million contract extension that he signed to remain with the Pacers. The Spurs would be taking on just his contract in this particular NBA trade scenario and would be taking on an additional $5.3 million in salary for the 2021-22 season.

The Pacers would take on Jakob Poeltl’s contract, who will earn $8.7 million in the upcoming season. Lonnie Walker IV is entering the final year of his rookie deal and will receive $4.4 million, too. Indiana would also be able to use their $4.7 million trade exception that was created by Victor Oladipo being traded to the Houston Rockets midseason.

Walker IV will be a restricted free agent after the upcoming season, so while he will need a new contract, the Pacers will be able to match whatever offer sheet he chooses to sign. It’s difficult to envision the Pacers having to give him nearly as much as what Domantas Sabonis commanded on his deal.

Let’s take a look at whether this NBA trade scenario centered around Domantas Sabonis would make sense for both the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs.
