1228 wins, 22 playoff appearances, 6 Western Conference championships and 5 NBA championships. This is what the San Antonio Spurs achieved from the start of the 1997-98 season all the way through the 2018-19 season, before missing the playoffs for the first-time since the 1996-97 season.

For the first time in over two decades, the Spurs missed the playoffs last season and this year, they missed the playoffs again, marking this the end of an era in San Antonio and the first time in the Spurs’ 54 year history as an NBA franchise that they have missed the postseason in back-to-back seasons.

When you think about the Spurs organization over the years, the only word that comes to mind is dominance. This organization has been the epitome of what it means to be a championship organization in the NBA for years and while all good things must come to an end at some point, this may not be the case with the Spurs.

Sure, they have missed the playoffs for back-to-back years now, but the Spurs are doing what they do so well – building a young, sustainable core for future success. The pending NBA free agency of both DeMar DeRozan and Rudy Gay reigns large over the future plans of the Spurs, but with key young talents on their roster, San Antonio is set up for a lot of success moving forward with or without these two veterans.

Derrick White, Dejounte Murray, Lonnie Walker IV, Keldon Johnson and others make up what looks to be a very promising young core for the Spurs to build with to ensure the future success of this franchise.

However, the Spurs have been close to being in the playoffs the last two seasons and they are going to do everything they can to ensure that they make it back there next year. Player development will continue to be key for San Antonio in the offseason, but they are not going to just sit back and watch everybody else improve their team.

The Spurs are going to be looking for ways to improve their team this offseason whether or not DeRozan and Gay are on it next year, which is why this offseason is going to be a very busy one of the San Antonio Spurs.
