The Hypothetical Trade
Clippers Receive: Buddy Hield, 2021 Second-Round Pick
Kings Receive: Ivica Zubac, Luke Kennard
Looking at this trade, some Kings fans are going to want to know why they would have to give up Hield and a second-round pick just to acquire a role player in Zubac and another likely role player in Kennard. Well, it also helps the franchise move on from a player who simply has not wanted to be in Sacramento for quite some time.
Kennard would be an intriguing addition for the Kings, as he could fill the role left by Hield. He averaged 8.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. That was in a fairly limited role with the Clippers. It’s a drop in talent, but at least they could help replace the loss of Hield especially if he reaches the 15.8 points per game he scored with the Detroit Pistons two years ago.
For the Clippers, this is a no-brainer deal. They obviously did not love the fit that Kennard had on the roster and Hield would bring an upgrade from a scoring perspective. Taking pressure off of Paul George and Kawhi Leonard is something that they would have to be interested in doing.
Giving up Zubac and Kennard would be well worth the price for Hield. Adding in a second-round pick just adds to the pot for Los Angeles.
Neither side would feel like a massive winner in this trade, unless Hield simply clicks with the two superstars for the Clippers. Los Angeles is a piece or two away from serious NBA Finals contention, although they could already be there depending on how the rest of the playoffs play out. Hield could be the piece that pushes them over the top.
Expect to see the NBA go through a very busy offseason. Both the Kings and Clippers will be open for business and could make some big-time moves. Buddy Hield is a name to keep a close eye on.
