Does this trade trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
The Minnesota Timberwolves have tried and failed to build around Karl-Anthony Towns numerous times. Andrew Wiggins never managed to take the next step to being a top-tier wing player. The attempt to trade for Jimmy Butler was an aggressive one that ended up failing. While it’s too early to make a declaration, the D’Angelo Russell trade will cost them their 2021 first-round pick, too.

With how long Towns has been in Minnesota, it may be overdue to move on and get a large haul for him to then try their luck building around Anthony Edwards. Being able to get a player like Brandon Ingram out of it would instantly solidify the small forward spot with his dynamic scoring ability and improved three-point shooting.
The Timberwolves would be going the route of having a serviceable big man to man the five-spot as opposed to paying for a star player. In this scenario, Steven Adams would slot in as the starter while Jaxson Hayes would develop behind him.
The Timberwolves need to be sure they capitalize on Karl-Anthony Towns’ trade value before more losing seasons result in him growing tired of sticking around. Being proactive and getting a major haul now would be a favorable thing to do as they look toward the Anthony Edwards era.
