Does this trade make sense for the Minnesota Timberwolves?
The Minnesota Timberwolves have tried and failed to make big swings to win with Karl-Anthony Towns. It’s not fair to count the D’Angelo Russell trade among those efforts given how few games they were able to play together in 2019-20, but regardless, some reconfiguration is needed in the supporting cast.
The Timberwolves are set to have $131.1M on the books for the upcoming season unless they manage to shed some salary. There are some key candidates they could look to do that with like Ricky Rubio or Jarrett Culver, but they will surely still need to bring back some salary in return.
One way the Timberwolves could look to shed salary is by trading D’Angelo Russell to a team that has a need for offensive firepower with salary cap room to take on a big deal. The New York Knicks fit that description, especially with how they are getting out-gunned by Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA playoffs.
Immanuel Quickley is very quickly emerging as one of the NBA’s young stars and being dealt to Minnesota where he could see an increased role could really prove that. Quickley, this season, averaged 11.4 points per game, 2.1 rebounds, and 2.1 assists off the bench for the Knicks.

The Timberwolves are in a full on rebuild mode and this offseason will prove that especially. Minnesota will be looking to bring in some young talent and Immanuel Quickley could prove to be a great addition for the squad to pursue.
