Collin Sexton – Cleveland Cavaliers

The Cavaliers are in an interesting position as a franchise because while they have some great young players, they are kind of stuck financially and they really do need to add a ton of more talent in order to be something special.

Kevin Love is still owed $60.2M over the next two years, which is money that the Cavaliers will not be able to get off their books unless Love is willing to give up a ton of money to be bought out of his contract like Blake Griffin did with the Detroit Pistons.

With not much cap space to begin with and a lot of moves needing to be made in order to turn this team into a real threat in the Eastern Conference, the Cavaliers likely will not be looking to give big contracts out to some of their young stars up for a contract extension, but Collin Sexton has earned a big raise in his contract.

Now in his third season in the league, Sexton has emerged as one of the best young scoring talents in the league, as he is averaging 24.3 points per game this season and shooting 48.1% from the floor. While some classify him as a “ball hog,” he basically needs to be because the Cavaliers as a whole are not a really talented team.

He is the best player on a bad team right now and as a result, he has been playing out of his mind, along with his fellow backcourt member Darius Garland, who is another young guard that Cleveland is really high on.

The Cavaliers will likely have to pay Sexton at some point in the offseason to avoid free agency after the 2021-22 season, but how big of a contract they give Sexton is yet to be determined. They will likely not want to be tied down to a huge deal like Kevin Love’s, especially in the event that they look to trade Collin Sexton in the future.

Now, I am not saying that Sexton’s future in Cleveland is in jeopardy, because they do like him being their young leader, but down the road, they could run into a problem where they need to dump some salary in order to go after some higher level talents or move young talents.

As a result, they do not want to be tied down a max-contract with Collin Sexton, especially with Kevin Love still on the payroll in Cleveland. Like Miles Bridges, Sexton has earned a big contract-extension, but who knows what kind of deal the Cavaliers are looking to offer him this offseason.
