#1 Monty Williams – Phoenix Suns
Adding Chris Paul and Jae Crowder to their roster ahead of the season were two big acquisitions that are paying off big time for the Phoenix Suns, but naming Monty Williams as their head coach ahead of the 2019-20 season was the best move this organization has made in a long time.
While he did not find much success from 2010-2015 as the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets/Pelicans, Williams has brought a new energy with him to Phoenix and you could tell last year that big things were coming for the Suns. He just relates to this team and culture so well and as a result, he has the Suns one game out from having the best record not just in the Western Conference, but in the entire NBA!
The last time the Suns held the best regular season record in the NBA was during the 2004-05 season when they went 62-20 en route to making the Western Conference Finals, ultimately falling short of making the NBA Finals after losing to the San Antonio Spurs.
What separates this year’s Suns team from others is not only their depth at every position, but the fact that they are one of three teams that have ranked inside the Top-10 in both offensive and defensive rating all season long.

Phoenix is one of the best defensive teams in the league this year, as well as one of the most efficient offensive teams, which is why they have a really strong chance to possibly win their first title in franchise history!
Monty Williams has taken a team that had nothing going for them to places that they have rarely seen as an organization, which is why he is very deserving of being named this year’s Coach of the Year.
