3 midseason acquisitions around the NBA that have not panned out

P.J. Tucker – Milwaukee Bucks

All season long, P.J. Tucker was one of the most talked about trade targets for numerous championship-caliber teams and in mid-March, before the NBA trade deadline, the Milwaukee Bucks acquired P.J. Tucker, Rodions Kurucs, a 2021 second-round pick swap and a 2022 1st Round Pick from the Rockets in exchange for D.J. Augustin, D.J. Wilson, a 2021 first-round pick swap (Top-9 protected) and a 2023 first-round pick.

Because of his impact defensively and all of the little things he can do to help his team win games, the acquisition of P.J. Tucker for the Bucks seemed like a huge addition, but he has barely made an impact in Milwaukee.

Not only has he not played in a lot of games due to injury, but in 7 games with the Bucks, Tucker has only averaged 2.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, but he has shot 5-11 (45.5%) from three-point range. The veteran is still doing a bunch of other things that don’t show up in the stat sheets like making extra passes and getting teammates open, but his impact with the Bucks has been minimal.

Maybe he will make more noise in the playoffs and be a key part of their defensive approach then, but as of right now, this trade seems to have been a waste for the Bucks. Not only did they get rid of a valuable veteran player in D.J. Augustin, but they also traded away some valuable draft picks as well.

After trading for Jrue Holiday at the beginning of the year, the Bucks were already thin on draft assets and now, they are even thinner. Milwaukee now has only six draft picks through 2027, including just one first-round pick in 2022.

This trade has not worked out the way the Bucks had hoped it would, so for their sake, let’s hope P.J. Tucker has some kind of role with them come playoff time because right now, his 16.1 minutes per game with the Bucks is not really doing much.
