Why This Trade Would Benefit The Orlando Magic

The Magic had a clear plan at the deadline and it was executed to perfection. This officially put the team in a rebuilding phase. This was unknown coming into the season, especially after a strong start. Once the team began to fall, that is when the front office made the decision to send players away and start over.

Markelle Fultz, who is recovering from a torn ACL, and Ross were the only players left. Fultz was supposed to have a big developmental season but the injury has pushed that back. Ross does not fit into the plan for the future so it was interesting to see Orlando hang onto him.

It makes one think that the Magic did not receive the offer that they wanted. Once the offseason comes around, these two sides can get back into negotiations. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is a starting-caliber guard who can step in and produce right away.

The most intriguing aspect of Kentavious Caldwell-Pope for the Magic is that he will be entering the final year of his current contract. Orlando would not have to keep him long-term by any means. In fact, he could be a steady option if RJ Hampton were to go through struggles at times before the All-Star break next season. Then the Magic could capitalize on Caldwell-Pope’s expiring deal at the NBA trade deadline.

Draft capital is like gold for a team like Orlando moving forward. They would be able to get some picks in return and continue to build assets for the future. The expectations cannot be too lofty when moving a player like Terrence Ross, but at the very least, he would net the Magic more to add to their growing collection.
