3 way-too-early free agents for Spurs to consider this offseason

Evan Fournier

Evan Fournier seems like the prototypical San Antonio player. He is not a huge name but has enough star power to contribute right away. These are the players that the Spurs have been going after in recent years, with the exception of a few. Fournier was sent to the Boston Celtics at the trade deadline and is in the final year of his contract and heading to free agency in the offseason.

With the Orlando Magic, Fournier was in the midst of another strong season scoring 19.7 points per game. Because of his contract situation, Fournier was traded away and has played four games with the Celtics thus far. His production is down to just 11.5 points per game.

This was to be expected with players like Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown on the perimeter. Fournier is the type of guard that can thrive under Popovich. He is a veteran option that would mesh well with the younger players. The price tag on Fournier might not be huge and the Spurs could take a chance here.

There is a real chance that Evan Fournier could decide to depart from the Celtics in NBA free agency. Boston is an underachieving team and that doesn’t appear set to change anytime soon. The Spurs are not better off in this regard either, but they will have substantially more spending room at their disposal.

The Celtics could decide to re-sign Fournier but it seems unlikely at this point. If he hits NBA free agency, Fournier will have some interested teams and the fit seems like a good one with the Spurs. The offers will almost surely be better elsewhere and it’s not like staying in Boston would enable him to be part of something special.
