This Blazers-Suns offseason trade is focused on Robert Covington

Before the season began, the Portland Trail Blazers were big “buyers” in the NBA offseason and were looking for ways to add as much talent as they could to their roster to potentially contend for a championship this season. In doing so, they added veteran forward Robert Covington and he has been a really solid complimentary player for them this season next to Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum.

In 47 games with Portland this season, Covington has averaged 9.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.6 steals, 1.3 blocks and has shot 39.6% from beyond-the-arc. Covington’s ability to essentially be a wing that plays the power-forward position is what has made him such an integral part of this Blazers team.

Not to mention, Covington is an excellent defensive player and leads the Portland Trail Blazers in defensive rating per 100 possessions. The “3-and-D’ Mentality that Covington plays with is why he is such a big part of the Blazers success to this point and why they are a team to watch in the championship conversation out west.

Led by Damian Lillard, the Portland Trail Blazers are a team not many people are talking about when it comes to the top teams in the Western Conference. They are closing in on being one of the Top-4 teams in the Western Conference and with everyone fully healthy again, they could be a very dangerous team down the stretch.

However, if they wind up seeing an early exit in the playoffs, the Blazers could look to make some offseason moves, especially since they are tight on cap space. This will certainly be something to monitor in NBA trade rumors. Recently acquired Norman Powell is expected to become a free agent and opt out of his player option and both Zach Collins and Enes Kanter are going to be free agents, which is why Portland could potentially look to trade Covington in the offseason to free up some much needed cap space.

If Covington becomes available in trade talks, the Phoenix Suns could be an intriguing team that pops up in the conversation to land the veteran forward. Phoenix is definitely a team to watch in the championship conversation this season and could look to add even more talent in the offseason.

Could the Suns look to add Robert Covington for more depth and firepower this coming offseason? Let’s take a look at what they would have to potentially give up to acquire Covington from the Trail Blazers.
